Teachers must continually educate themselves on the content they teach, making sure they keep up with new discoveries. They should engage with professionals in the subject and do research that they can use during their lessons. Teachers can get involved with both broad educational associations and smaller groups within their subject, as well as workshops that contain professional learning opportunities. With continuing their strive towards professionalism, teachers can ensure that they are doing the best for their students and their school. Teachers updating themselves on new knowledge in their field and teaching it in the classroom will result in more modern, knowledgable students. For my personal involvement with this standard, I’ve highlighted three sources that I use: NEA Today, Goodreads, and a shared Google Document created by my peers at Hollins University.

NEA Today
NEA Today is a magazine printed by the National Education Association sent out to teachers and educators who are members of their state’s education association. These magazines contain articles about important and relevant topics in today’s education climate. They include stories from educators, administrators, and even students that cover a variety of subjects and issues facing our schools today. These magazines provide me and thousands of other subscribers with information about issues in our schools and tips and insight on how to face them.

Goodreads
Goodreads is a site that allows users to track their reading, discover new books, and engage with other readers. This site provides their members with recommendations and lists varying by subject, author, time period, content, and more. For an English teacher, this site is valuable to keep up with what students may be reading outside of class, as well as finding new books that can be used in the classroom, whether to read or provide in a personal library. Teachers may also use this site as a way to promote community in their classrooms, having students create their own accounts and connect with others based on their reading preferences, as well as have a way to track the books they read over the year.

Doing It Right Reading List
In order to create a classroom that represents diverse learners, one must start with the content they teach. A group of my peers at Hollins University created this reading list that contains works by authors of color. This list organizes books into a variety of genres, many of which are eligible for the classroom, whether it is in a classroom library or used in a novel or poetry unit.
