A well-organized, open-minded classroom environment is incredibly important for both the teacher and the students. Teachers should be encouraged to educate in an environment where no one is ridiculed for being wrong, people are not judged based on their personal lives and opinions, and everybody is able to work together to create positive outcomes. In settings like these, students feel more comfortable to express themselves and share their opinions. If students are participating more, they learn more, leading to better scores on tests and more rapid learner growth. An environment that is tailored to fit the needs of the students will result in a calmer and better-working environment. I’ve included my classroom management plan as well as photos of the classroom library and zen zone I redesigned in my student teaching advisor’s classroom as evidence of my knowledge of creating structured and ideal learning environments.

Classroom Management Plan

In my internship in classroom management, I created a classroom management plan that details all the possible structure issues and needs of my future classroom. While it is just a guideline document and will obviously need to be tweaked based on the class environment and school rules, it serves as a good basis for keeping control of the classroom.

Classroom Library

During my student teaching, I redesigned and created a new system for my supervisor’s classroom library. I sorted and color coordinated books by genre, created a system for book students are currently reading and book returns, as well as setting out books for special occasions, like women’s history month or black history month. Having a part of the classroom that promotes reading without insisting upon it can be beneficial in developing student appreciation for reading.

Zen Zone

Next to the classroom library, my supervising teacher has a “zen zone” as a place for students to read, work, and calm down. In addition to redesigning the library, I added more decor to the zen zone to make it more comfortable and appealing to the students. Providing students with a designated space in the classroom that has the specific purpose being somewhere calm and comfortable that students can use to relax is important. Having a spot to rely on that students can wind down in can help reduce anxiety in the classroom, whether they use it to read, finish their work, or just take a few moments to breathe.
