Teachers must be open-minded and educated about their student’s cultural identities, economic statuses, and disabilities and provide an equal environment where all kids can learn and thrive. Students deserve a space to learn where they do not feel pressured, insecure, or discriminated against for their differences, but instead feel uplifted, confident, and comfortable. Diverse academic conditions allow for more students to feel accepted and understood, therefore they have a higher chance to excel in their work. All students deserve to be understood and given the help they need, not just a one-size-fits-all method of teaching. To showcase my knowledge of this standard, I’ve included a flyer I created on students with ADHD and a few examples of student work from my student teaching made by children with IEPs.

Students with ADHD

I created this flyer with my classmates in a course in secondary curriculum and instruction. It supplies educators with knowledge and tips on how to best accommodate students with ADHD to help create the best environment possible for their education. All students deserve to learn in an environment where they can feel comfortable, especially students who may struggle with attention or motivation. By allowing students with ADHD to have shorter, more structured units and freedom to complete their work on their own schedule, they will likely be able to turn in better quality work and feel respected in the classroom.

Altered Lessons: One-Pager

In the tenth grade classes that I am currently student teaching, there are several students who are in the special education program and have IEPs. They often have to have lessons and assignments adjusted for them by their teacher in order to complete them to the best of their ability. For these tenth graders, I created a one-pager assignment that many students with IEPs struggled with, whether it be understanding what I expected from them or just finding the time and motivation to complete the work. For this, I allowed them to complete the one-pager to their ability. I have a few examples of other student work of this project on my “Application of Content” page, but to the right are a few examples of work from students who are in the special education program and completed this assignment at their ability level, sometimes with help from an instructional aide.
