As a teacher, one must recognize that every student is different. They have different ways of studying, retaining and recalling information, and interpretations of material, as well as having their own unique personalities, ways of expressing emotions, and personal lives. To successfully reach out to all students, a teacher must incorporate activities that include audio, visual, and tactile elements. These cover the three basic types of learning, and provide an array of opportunities to involve students with new knowledge. The more diverse the opportunities a student is given to learn new information, the more likely they will be to grow as a learner. I’ve included parts of a larger lesson I created in a course and tutoring based on that lesson to introduce the concept of learner development.

Shakespeare Text Set
I created this text set and lesson in a course focused on reading in the content area. This document details a list of diverse texts and media that includes range for all levels of readers. It also includes an outline for a lesson plan that varies in learning styles, ranging from lecture to games to essays. By presenting a variety of options for learning to students, the majority of the class can feel represented and included in the lesson, allowing more students to gain more knowledge. For instance, students who are more visual learners will feel comfortable with the variety of graphic novels and videos in the lessons, while students who may enjoy more tactile learning will feel represented in the multiple activities that involve hands-on learning, such as the worksheets.

Text Set Tutoring
Using this text set, I did a tutoring lesson (cut short by the pandemic) with a simplified version of Macbeth, having a sixth grader with a fourth grade reading level complete an anticipation guide before reading the text. I wanted to tailor this assessment to a younger reading level and make sure it can easily be accommodated. Though some of the vocabulary is more advanced, it can be easily explained by a teacher or tutor. The anticipation guide is simple enough to work for any grade level, making for an assignment that many students can feel represented in.
