Assessment is a crucial tool in education to track student growth throughout the school year. Teachers may give their students quizzes throughout the unit and one test at the end, which both monitors learner progress and individual growth. However, there are multiple ways teachers can track their student’s progress that don’t involve a quiz or test, such as an activity that involves active participation. A teacher must think thoroughly about what type of assessment to implement for each lesson. Each type of assessment has a unique purpose that can produce positive outcomes for both the teacher and the students. I’ve included a PowerPoint I created in an education course that focuses on formative assessments throughout a lesson, a final assessment I created for a unit I made during student teaching, as well as a rubric I created for a summative essay assessment.

Media Analysis Presentation

I created the PowerPoint to the right for a course on secondary curriculum and instruction that exemplifies the idea of formative assessment. After showing each failed advertisement, students are asked three questions to observe their level of knowledge about media analysis and literacy. They have to use critical thinking and previous knowledge (from either the terms they learned for the unit or what they know from before the unit) to answer these questions. By asking students questions regarding the content and their previous knowledge of it throughout the lesson, educators are able to find what strengths and weaknesses each group of students has with the content and alter their lesson accordingly.

Romeo & Juliet Final Assessment

To sum up my Romeo & Juliet unit for my advanced ninth grade students, I wanted to create a larger assignment that includes a more traditional assessment format while also allowing students the choice to do something more creative. The students could either write a Shakespearean sonnet summarizing the plot of Shakespeare’s play, or choose one of two discussion questions and answer it in one page double-spaced. Giving the students the choice between these two assignments, both which have educational benefits and recall on their previous knowledge of the content, gives them autonomy while also showing the teacher what they’ve learned. I’ve included the assignment instructions and rubric to the left, as well as student examples of each assessment choice.

Rubrics

A simple way to help both the teacher and students when it comes to assessment is to create a rubric, especially for larger, more complex assignments. It outlines what is expected of student work and gives them guidelines to meet, while also allowing the teacher an easier way to grade. I created the rubric to the right for my summative assessment for a media analysis unit. It details what is expected of students and what score they can anticipate to receive on their essays depending on the amount and quality of work they produce.
