Teachers must be able to implement their knowledge of a subject in a way that engages all students. These lessons must be stimulating, but simple enough for students who have not mastered the subject can understand. Four of the most important skills that educators should aim to help their students develop are critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and technology. By promoting analytical ideas, creativity, group work, and technology use in their lessons, teachers can help students prepare for their futures, no matter what subject they are teaching. This standard is important to the teaching profession because teachers have to not only have knowledge of their subject, but pedagogy as well. A teacher must be able to take content and turn it into a successful lesson that impacts learners beyond the content itself. I’ve included three lessons from my student teaching experience that showcase my skills in creating lessons that can reach all types of students through the varied learning styles included in them.

Shakespearean Sonnets

For my student teaching, I created a unit based on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” for advanced English ninth grade students. On the first day of the unit, I introduced a bit about Shakespeare’s life and detailed his sonnet style, engaging the students with this style through guided and independent practice where we identified the crucial parts of his sonnets. After practicing and acquainting the students with Shakespearean sonnets on the first day, we spent the second day writing our own sonnets in Shakespearean style. To the right, I included the first and second day lesson plans and student examples of each assignment. These assignments are both hands-on and engaging students with the style of sonnet, but one in a more literal way and one more creative. The variety of this lesson can appeal to many types of students.

Independent Reading Unit One-Pager

For the tenth grade English classes that I taught during my student teaching, I created an independent reading unit that was used to shift them from finishing their third SOL essay into another unit. During these two weeks, I gave students most of the time to read the books they chose and finish their essays as well as work on a few assignments involving literary analysis. For the final project, I wanted students to be more creative with their interpretation of their book. I created a one-page assignment where the students folded a paper into four parts and discussed the author, a quote they found interesting, the main theme(s) of the book, and their favorite or main character. This assignment allowed them to have a more hands-on, creative assignment for their book while also acting as a summative assessment. I’ve included my own examples and student examples to the left.

Body Biographies Lesson

With my ninth grade Shakespeare unit, I wanted to include more creative lesson plan ideas to acquaint them with ideas of character and literary analysis while also allowing them to express their more artistic sides. I came up with an assignment to follow act four in which the students split into groups and create life-size posters for characters in the play. These posters detail the character’s strengths, weaknesses, values, and goals, as well as symbols and important quotes. To the right, I’ve included the Madeline Hunter lesson plan templates for the assignment, the rubric I used to grade the student work, and examples that the students created.
